Should I Service my Hot Tub?

If you look after your hot tub and maintain the correct chemical levels you might be wondering if you really need a service?

The problem with hot tubs is that they can be deceptive.  Just like your car, boiler or water heater, they might appear simple on the surface, but there are a lot of ways that they can suddenly stop working and then you’ve got an even bigger problem on your hands.

Hot tubs aren’t cheap; as a luxury investment, you’ll want to get your money’s worth out of them.  And just like a car or heater if you spend time or money maintaining it, the chances are it’s going to last longer.

Your hot tub might continue to work on its own, but it could last a whole lot longer if it’s regularly serviced.  In-fact hot tubs can last anywhere from 5 – 20 years which is a wide and wild range, but it shows just how much control homeowners have.

Think of it this way, if you spend $5,000 on a hot tub, and it lasts 5 years then you’ve effectively spent $1,000 per year.

If you spend $5,000 on a hot tub and it lasts 15 years then you’ve effectively spent $333 per year of its life. Ok so you may have to spend some dollars on servicing it and replacing parts, but you also won’t have to pay out for a replacement either.  You’ll also have the peace of mind of a working hot tub that you can continue to enjoy without stress or worry.

Benefits of a hot tub service

A professional service is important in addition to regular checks and cleaning you do on a daily or weekly basis.  It looks at areas that you may not have the time or experience in, such as:

  • Emptying the hot tub and deep cleaning, re-filling and balancing chemicals
  • Flushing pipes and jets to remove limescale and debris
  • Checking electrical components for faulty and wear
  • Checking and cleaning filters with high-pressure hose
  • Replacing worn parts as needed

One of the critical areas that a service covers is caring for the major components such as the pump, heater and cover.  Though cleaning and chemical balancing can help, inevitably these parts will wear down with time and when one breaks down it can have a  knock-on effect on other components too.

How often to schedule a service

This is really up to you, however, we recommend at least one yearly maintenance service for hot tubs – this is in addition to regular weekly maintenance which you can do yourself.

Your manufacturer will likely have a recommended schedule you can follow as well – this may tell you how often you should replace components such as the water pump, cover etc..

If you do not have the time or inclination to empty and refill your hot tub then we advise you to schedule a service at least once per quarter.
